East Coast Deal Close to Finalization

This is an update to our bulletin on February 4th which announced that the International Longshoremen's Association and United States Maritime Alliance had reached a tentative agreement on a six-year coastwide (Maine to Texas) master contract.  That agreement was pending ratification by both sides and the passing of local union contracts.

There has been a rumor floating around this past week that the dockworkers in the New York/New Jersey port were unable to reach a contract agreement and that this in turn would lead to an East Coast strike.  However, we are pleased to announce that late last night the ILA and the New York Shipping Association tentatively agreed to a local contract.  This contract is still pending rank-and-file ratification, but it is a step to finally putting the threat of an East Coast strike behind us for the next six years.

There are meetings scheduled between both sides next week in Tampa in which they will discuss the master contract and the local contracts.  Upon conclusion of those meetings, they will set a date for rank-and-file votes on all contracts.

We will continue to watch the situation and provide you with updates when there is a development.  Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact Scott Clark at sclark@uswwl.com or phone our office at 859-525-7477.
