Contract dockworkers continue their seven-day strike at Hong Kong's busiest container terminal (HIT). The stevedores at Hong Kong International Terminals (HIT) are requesting a 17% wage increase over a two year period, however, the employers have rejected that proposal. Currently the Hong Kong Labor Department and HIT top management are negotiating but it seems a compromise is not within reach.
Due to the ongoing strike, a backlog has formed within the port and it is estimated that the average berthing time is 50 hours per vessel. In addition to the backlog, the decreased labor force is causing a slowdown in the time it takes to finish unloading/loading a vessel.
At this time some carriers are diverting vessels to other terminals or ports to try to get vessels processed at a faster pace. While this remains a possibility, if multiple vessels divert to different ports, those ports are susceptible to delays as well.
We will continue to watch the situation and provide you with updates when there is a development. Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact Scott Clark at sclark@uswwl.com or phone our office at 859-525-7477.
